Texas Stonewall Democrats Join Stonewall Chapters in Condemning TDP Chairman’s Harmful Remarks Against Trans Texans

The Texas Stonewall Democratic Caucus joins statewide Stonewall chapters in condemning State Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa’s harmful repeating of Republican falsehoods about transgender Texans to justify political losses by Democrats. Chairman Hinojosa tweeted an apology yesterday, but that isn’t enough. We expect far more from Texas Democratic Party leadership, so we insist that Chairman Hinojosa find a way to repair this wrongdoing or step aside to create space for new leadership – one that is more inclusive of all the party’s constituencies.

Let’s be clear – the LGBTQ+ community is not responsible for political losses by the Democratic Party. Our community voted Democratic this election at 86% according to NBC News data, only to see Chair Hinojosa amplify false and ill-informed Republican talking points. Our community always stands ready to provide resources and messaging support to deflect abhorrent and factless attacks by Republicans against trans Texans so as to refocus on issues at the front of the mind for all Texans like the economy but we were ignored.

We are a very seasoned community when it comes to discrimination and hate, and we are very resilient, strong, and unwavering in our commitment to support one another. Why? Because the history of Stonewall defines us as such! And, it should also still define the Democratic Party.

The Texas Stonewall Democratic Caucus stands solidly with transgender Texans and we will not waver from that. We appreciate the Democratic elected officials who support our community as allies. We expect the Democratic Party and our fellow Texans will stand with us and we will work tirelessly as partners and collaborators to ensure that they do.
