As President of Texas Stonewall Democrats, I want to address recent comments from James Talarico regarding transgender athletes participating in girls' sports.

 

Representative Talarico has been a strong ally to the LGBTQ+ community, and we recognize his past record of standing against legislation targeting transgender students. His recent comments, however, represent a significant shift in his position, and that shift deserves a serious conversation.

 

We believe fairness and safety in athletics matter. But those principles cannot become a political excuse for discrimination against transgender youth. We need clarity about what policies are being proposed, who would make these determinations, and what protections would remain for transgender students.

 

Texas Stonewall Democrats will support Democratic candidates, but our support does not mean surrendering our principles. We will continue to hold our candidates accountable, ask difficult questions, and advocate for every member of our community.

 

We can support our candidates without surrendering our principles.

 

Transgender Texans are not bargaining chips. They are our community, our Democratic coalition, and our Texas family.

 

We will continue to fight for their dignity, safety, and equal treatment.
